Picking a Pet Performance Task
This performance task is part of the Smarter Balanced Practice Test. The task stimulus presents a decision that is needed on which type of animal to get as a class pet, and provides a table showing students’ 1st choice and 2nd choice votes. Students are required to reason about different ways of interpreting the votes in order to make a decision about the class pet. The task also requires students to reason about the dimensions of a tank that would work for a turtle. There are five items in the task. The task is designed to support students in building directly on their reasoning from earlier items of the task in order to complete later items of the task, and there is an example of a scoring dependency in this task.

Case study 1 is an analysis of an English Learner (EL) student’s responses to the performance task.
